Ah yes, the details. The amount of thinking you do when you're building a house! Every decision is SUPER IMPORTANT, and must be made promptly! While you continue to work / kid-wrangle / monitor the budget / transition your five year old to school / do your groceries / get less than 6 hours sleep due to a wakeful toddler. Argh!
In this week's episode:
We did our first walk-through with the electrician. It took two hours. What mm height do you want the power points above the skirting? And the light switches? Where will your tv be plugged in? Where do you want the oven power switch? The phone box? The heat pump? Sensor lights outside? Future proof for fibre? Security system? Fire alarms? LED or fluro in the garage? Tell me, tell me, tell me!!
The cladders are cladding. And cursing. Our window flashings are apparently VERY technical. They have only done one window. Took them 4 hours. And we're gonna get them to rip it out and do it again. Which means taking down the whole wall and cladding that again too. Bummer cladders! Maybe less beersies and more checking-with-the-ownersies next time! Jokes guys! You're doing a great job, it looks amaze! (but not joking about doing the window / wall again, soz...)
We mished it to Tawa today (approx an hour away) to spend about an hour and a half in a bathroom showroom because they are having their once-a-year massive sale. We bribed the boys with Maccas, and free access to the tablet while at the shop. We got everything on our laundry and bathroom shopping list, and saved a good $2 500 on the quote from our plumber!! WIN!!
Sat down with our kitchen magicians earlier this week and thrashed out yet more details. Like how tall is our biggest pot? Where will we put our cups? Final decision on the bench top for the scullery? Oh, speaking of scullery, it has some of my fav features of the house in it! Like...

The boys are going to have their own little area in the scullery just for them! The bench is at child's height, and we'll keep a bunch of stuff (see above for an idea) in the shelves below so they can access the equipment and food etc themselves! This is just in the vain hope that on a Saturday morning, when they rise at 6am, instead of coming into our room to cuddle and "read" and fight and jump, they'll head down to the scullery, get themselves a healthy breakfast of cheerios, milk and raisins, and eat it on the couch in front of Sesame Street while I SLEEEEEEEEEEP! Worth a whole section of the scullery? I think so.
Also in the scullery.... ^THIS!! I know, right?? Except our wee hatch will be above the bench. So I come home in the pouring rain (a bit like today!) with three, count them, THREE children in tow, and a boot-load of groceries to unpack. Instead of schlepping back and forth and back and forth from the garage through the laundry/mudroom, the hallway, the kitchen, and into the scullery with bags of food. Instead! I get one excited child to run to the scullery to unlock the hatch, and I unload the boot DIRECTLY INTO THE PANTRY!! *swoon*
And for my final trick, ladies and gentleman....
And for my final trick, ladies and gentleman....
OK maybe less All-American than this. But pretty much the same. It'll have our massive calendar, our mail and paper sorting system (same as the one pictured, go IKEA!), and charging station for all our devices (yup, also IKEA!), and a place to keep our car keys / sunglasses / pens etc. We're even having a USB power point so we can skip the bulky plug attachment of our chargers!
Yes people, it's these details that make the difference, and remind us why we're building. Everything built to suit how we actually live. It ain't pretty, trendy, scandi, or designer Dahling. But having your shit together behind the scenes means the interior deco areas will work that much better.
After all that boring practical stuff, maybe next time I'll do a post on gorgeous things I really want to put in the house! (But will be to broke to actually buy once the house is done :/ ) Meanwhile, some flowers to take the edge off....
